The company
About Us
House of Chow is a dance theater company rooted in Asian identities, stories, and embodied traditions. We blend Hip-Hop, Asian folk dance, and martial arts to create work that explores spirituality, philosophy, and lived experience through powerful, honest performance.
We are proud to have been presented by organizations including Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, the Asian American Arts Alliance, and Culture Lab LIC. Our work has received support from Admerasia’s 2023 Community Spotlight & Grant, Culture Lab’s 2024 Emergence Artist Residency, The Center for Cultural Power, and Goddard Riverside’s 2025–2026 Artist-in-Residence program.
Our performances have been featured in:
AAPI Dance Festival at APAP (2023)
The Estrogenius Festival (2023)
ARISE Spring Dance Festival (2024)
New Works Festival at Culture Lab LIC (2024)
Call for Performers
Values
We are always excited to meet new artists who:
are community-oriented and invested in contributing to and being nurtured by community
have a learner’s spirit and are open-hearted
are willing to be emotionally honest and vulnerable on stage
Representation
As our work centers Asian women’s perspectives, we primarily seek women, femme-identifying, non-binary, and gender-expansive individuals who identify as Asian — including those who are multiracial, mixed-race, or adoptees.
Experience
We welcome both pre-professional (limited training and experience) and professional dancers (5-8+ years of training and experience) to build in rehearsal. All members will receive training and mentorship tailored to their role. Limited rehearsal and performance honorariums are available for select professional artists.
Dance Background
We specialize in Hip-Hop Dance/Street styles with foundations in Popping, Boogaloo, Locking, Rocking, Breaking, Waacking, House, and more as well as Asian cultural practices (folk dance and martial arts). We also welcome movers from diverse disciplines who are committed to expanding their practice and exploring storytelling, acting, and character development.
Performer Testimonials
Hear from our performers how their experience has been:
“House of Chow is a sisterhood. I came into HoC looking to build my hip hop foundations and refine my dance skills but what I got out of it was so much more. Yvonne built a community for Asian female-identifying creatives to be themselves, to be heard and seen. Very often, Asian stories and struggles get overlooked but Yvonne used our shared experiences and turned it into art and in some way a therapeutic experience for all of us involved…”
- Fiona Tsang (TBD - Chinese American Professional Dancer)
“Working with Yvonne is a combination of effective cooperation, supportive mentorship, structured guidance and warm friendship. I like how Yvonne is very structured with her training curriculum, organized with her yearly to weekly agendas, clear with her goals in developing HoC, detailed with her artistic concepts and good with understanding strength and specialties of each member in HoC. I enjoy working and performing in her projects for HOC, which are inspired by her life stories, cultural values and missions to stand up for her people. It's beautiful how she transformed her experiences into creative storylines, visual concepts and dance movements. Besides, I respect her work ethic. She makes the workplace feel like home in which she creates a safe, non judgmental, open-minded, uplifting and sharing environment that every member can take part in.”
- Hovie Nguyen (Vietnamese, multidisciplinary dance artist, living in NYC for 8 years.)
